My Story

It started with the worst house on the block

My very first deal, back when I was 20, was the roughest house on the street, right next to Ames High. I cleaned it out myself, including picking up hundreds of needles in the yard before the real work even started.

People assume house flippers are just out for a quick buck. What actually happened is that house got fixed up, a nice couple bought it, and their kids walk to Ames High from it today. That's the part nobody talks about. When you fix the worst house on a street, the whole block gets better: the school, the safety, the streets, the neighbors. You're not pulling money out of a community, you're putting hundreds of thousands of dollars back into it.

Six years and 100-plus houses later, that's still why I do this. Some I keep as long-term rentals, some I fix up and sell back to families who'll love them. Either way, I'd rather leave a neighborhood better than I found it.
